Johns & Bhatia Engineering Consultants is a structural engineering consulting firm located in Bethesda, Maryland. We specialize in providing structural design services for buildings to a variety of clients including architects, contractors, private developers and federal agencies. We have more than 45 years of experience, which includes extensive work in the Washington D.C. area and overseas for both commercial and federal sector clients.  For over 25 years, we have furnished design, consulting, and investigative services for the Overseas Buildings Operations division of the U.S. State Department on U.S. consulates, embassies and compounds abroad in over 100 countries. Our company has also performed engineering services locally for the State Department and for various other federal government branches and agencies including the Department of Defense, the Architect of the Capitol and the General Services Administration (GSA). We work on a variety of building types including U.S. Embassies and Consulates, military facilities, specialized industrial, commercial, office buildings, parking structures, warehouses, light mercantile buildings, hospitals, churches, schools and residential buildings.

We have used the BIM (Building Information Modeling) program Revit Structure by Autodesk since 2007 to produce models and construction documents for numerous projects.  We have used this technology to make the design process and coordination with architects more efficient.  This includes the use of the program’s coordination tools such as interference checks and coordination reviews.  The use of BIM also allows us to utilize 3D simulation to help with the structural design and detailing of a project before it ever gets to the construction phase.  This helps eliminate problems with the design and give a 3D perspective of the structure, which helps communicate the design intent to our clients.  We regularly attend local BIM user groups as well as the yearly Autodesk University so that we are always on the cutting edge of this and any future technologies. We realize that BIM is the future of the industry and as more clients adopt it we hope to utilize it to its maximum capabilities and create a seamless process from design through construction on all of our projects.



Designing a building that achieves the architectural vision of the lead architect is the primary objective of the structural engineer. Each building is unique and requires individual engineering solution. The building structure can be a simple and easy construction while achieving goals set by the architect. It is very important to design the structure to accommodate space-planning requirements and the building elevations developed by the architect.

Cost Control

The cost of different possible engineering solutions for the building should be studied carefully so as to provide the client with most economical solution. The client has a certain budget and it is our responsibility to design the structure within this budget. The lead structural engineer will provide a design solution during the concept phase, which is within the budget, and to make sure this structural concept is followed during the preparation of the construction documents.

Historical Preservation

Historical building structures present different challenges than those posed by regular building structures. One must review and research the existing building documents to understand the original building structure. The review is also necessary to determine all of the modifications to the building since the original design. A comprehensive field survey and review of the previous repair work is necessary to determine present condition of the building.


It is very important to be available to our clients and we take pride in providing personal service to our clients. We assign a project manager as a point of contact and he is available for consultation throughout the job. During the construction phase we assign the same engineering staff that designed the project to check shop drawings and respond to RFIs.  We are able to resolve construction problems immediately and without delaying the construction schedule.

Quality Control

We are committed to and are known to produce a high quality construction documents. A principal or senior engineer reviews the construction documents for quality assurance and quality control throughout the job and before issuing the documents for construction. We use the latest computer assisted design and drafting programs to produce high quality drawings.
